I made this so that ideas for dust 514 expansions, weapons, game mechanics, or really anything that will broaden the scope of the game. I have a lot of ideas myself. (Note: i do not expect any of these things at launch, my ideas are merely suggestions for additions to the game.)
1. Boarding Ships This is something i think that every dust player (and no eve player) would like to have in the game. after Dust establishes itself as an important addition into the eve universe, and as capsuleers get more comfortable with the concept of relying on human armies to get their stuff done, we should be able to board larger eve ships and wreak havoc on them. for this, we would need special cannons that we can use to fire ourselves at the ships we want to board. these cannons should be moderately expensive and can be mounted either on a planet or a ship. Dust commanders and eve players alike would need some sort of "merc cannon" skill allowing them to build these. in order to avoid simply splattering all over the target ship, we would need a special module that allows us to phase through walls once we reach a certain speed. these modules would have levels just like the rest of them and it would require a higher level module to board a higher level ship. the price for each module should range from 50k isk for basic and 250k isk for regular so that if you fail you lose a significant amount of money. the amount of players that can be in a ship at once should be 4-8 depending on the size and level of the ship. Dustbunny (did you know that's what eve players call us!?) launchers should be able to fire an entire squad before having to recharge for like 5 or so minutes.
once inside the ship, the players would have to confront the massive defense forces within the ship, since, apparently, all these ships have massive crews. in order to give eve players some control over what is happenning within their ship, they should be able to deploy AI controlled defense units, ranging from pistol wielding grunts that die in three hits to the ultra-expensive juggernaut-ish Sentinel, which would dual wield lmgs and have ridiculous health, but only be deployable on titans. they would also be albe to deploy one Abomination at a time. abominations would be genetically engineered bosses that would cost horrendous amounts of isk and utilize a portion of the ship's powergrid or cpu. you should also be able to hack control units for these minions to turn them against the capsuleer.
If the dust players manage to get to the more important parts of the ship (engine, bridge, repair units, guns, steering units, shield generators, or cargo holds) they have the option of a) destroying them by knifing the circuit panels (knives should have some purpose, right?) or b) hacking them and turning them against the ship or enemy fleet (turrets could fire at enemy ships or the ship itself, the ship could be turned around, engines could be turned off, shield generators could be disabled, and repair units could be used to inflict damage instead).
once the dusties make it into the pilots quarters, they would find the pilot sitting in his little pod, staring at them with that "OMFGWTFBBQ-THESEGUYSARETRYINGTOKILLMEINSIDEMYOWNSHIPOHHELLNONOWIMGONNAKICKSOMEARSE look on their face. now, if the dusties could simply yank the pilot out of his pod and execute him, that would be boring. the pilot should get one last chance to take back his now crumbling ship. their pod would be connected to a PDU (personal defense unit), which is basically the fnal boss of this "level". PDUs could come in all shapes and sizes, all with different advantages, prices, and tactics. the eve player would simply give orders to the PDU to attack a certain target at a certain range wth a certain tactic, similar to the way they control their ships. once the dusties destroy that, they can make a deal with the pilot to pay for his already heavily damaged ship back, let him escape and salvage the PDU, or smash the window so he gets sucked out by the vacuum and leave him stranded in the middle of nowhere with nothing but his pod and now crippled PDU.
to make it fair-ish, their would be no respawning on a ship, or calling in vehicles, and getting to zero health would put you in a bleed-out state in which your buddies must revive you within 30 seconds or so (there would be a skill to increase the time.)
anyway, that's my idea, but remember, this is about everybody's ideas, not just mine. please post your ideas and opinions as well. You'll probably come up with better ideas than me.
PS: I'm not saying it's bad to criticize people, but try to avoid trolling and all out negative comments. I want this to be a constructive thread in which devs can find things to put in this already awesome game all in one place.
PPS: If you are a dev and you are reading this, please take these ideas into consideration. After all, you do build your games for the players.

the only issue with that is that some EVErs will be really mad if a tiny little pod can drill through their supertanked shields, and i don't think that you should have to wait until a ship has low shields. no reason we can't have both, though. |

the merc cannon can miss, and you may just end up flying out into space and eventually dying. the cannons themselves are what the eve players shoot at, and if they are destroyed you lose a lot of isk. only a reeeeeeeaaaaallly good dusty would be able to make it through the ridiculous amount of npcs that the eve players can stock up. the npcs would heavily outnumber you |

okay, so this was a bad idea.
what if instead of simply flinging the mercs themselves from a cannon, there were CRU missiles that could be fired from the ground or a relatively weak ship? the eve player being targeted would be able to target the transport ship (which would be easy to distinguish from other ships in the surrounding area), the ground installations that fired them, or the CRUs themselves. (note: CRU's should have low enough health to be destroyed while traveling from planet to ship, but high enough so that if one of the transport ships is really close to it they don't just get popped in one shot.)
instead of forcing eve players to use NPCs, they could just make it a choice. when one of the pods latches on, the eve player could decide to a) Use dusties to defend the ship by depleting the amount of clones in the CRU. In this method, the goal for the attacking dusties would be to inflct as much damage on the ship as possible before they lose all their clones (100 or so). the attackers would also be able to hack the on-board CRUs, and once all of those are hacked, the attackers are free to inflict as much damage as they please. the attacking CRU can't be hacked, and the defenders have infinite/a lot more clones. b) Use dusties to engage the attackers in a sudden death match with no respawning for either team (you better hope your dusties know what they're doing). This would be the fastest and most dangerous way to do it. on one hand, the defenders could win and you won't have to worry about the invading dusties anymore, but on the other, if the defenders lose, then the remaining attackers can just obliterate your ship from the inside out. c) NPCs. d) use some of your PG to eject the attacking pod. it should take +/-10 minutes to eject a pod and about 10% PG. different pods have different amounts of this. Obviously this isn't an option for PG heavy ships. e) self destruct. if you don't care about the ship or it's about to die anyway, then you can do this. at least they won't get their pod back,
I still like the idea of fighting a PDU at the end of these, though. a maximum of 6 players could engage one at a time, they can revive eachother during the fight, but it may be better to give the EVEr direct control over it. |

Evane Sa'edi wrote:Ship boarding is a good idea - the difficulties come from planning a way of balancing how DUST players interact with EVE players. Does an EVE pilot call in DUST mercs to subdue a rival or pirate ship that has been disabled? Or are boarding pods used in the middle of pitched battle as a shock tactic to capture the target? Does an EVE pilot fly the pod to target or a DUST pilot? Is the breaching pod a cloaked ship or a tactical torpedo that waits until target comes into range and then rams into the hull? shock tactic and tactical torpedo.
also, the Dust players would not pilot them, as the mercs select the match after the eve pilot selects a match type. they could be fired from installations on planets by dust players or by the special ships which would be, of course, piloted by eve players. this could just be another aspect of the game that encourages cooperation. |
